Autografts, which are known to cause pain that is sometimes intense, have largely been replaced by allografts in human surgery, but they are still used in 80% of animal grafts.
As after a fracture, a successful bone graft will, over time, thanks to successive remodelling, become as solid as the original bone and virtually undetectable radiologically.
